What is Semi - Permanent make up?
Also known as micro-pigmentation, SPMU is an advanced form of tattooing the skin. Hypo-allergenic pigments are carefully implanted into the skin using a digital machine with disposable micro needles. This is a two stage process, where a top up treatment is required 4-8 weeks later to make the treatment prefect.
What is the difference between Semi-Permanent make up and Microblading?
I get asked this a lot!! The main difference is the tool. Microblading uses a hand tool, whilst SPMU is performed using a digital machine. This is my preferred method, as I believe machine treated skin has better pigment retention, lasts longer and has less chance of scarring the skin.
What happens at my initial appointment?
Your appointment will start with an in-depth consultation to discuss in detail your expectations of the treatment. During your consultation we will complete a medical form together. If it is an eyebrow procedure, I will test the pigment/colour on your skin to make sure its the best one suited to you. I will then draw on your new eyebrow template and this will give you an indication of the final result.
You will be control every step of the way with the desired shape and color selection. When you are happy, the treatment will be performed and following that, aftercare will be given.
You will need to allow yourself up to 2hrs 30 mins for the initial procedure and up to 2hrs for the top up. SPMU isn’t a treatment to be rushed!
Why do I have a top up appointment?
The top up appointment is required to perfect and apply any slight changes that maybe required. We can add more hair strokes or shading to your eyebrows and build the colour to add more definition with the eyeliner.
I always work with the “less is more” approach at the initial appointment. As you can always add but can’t take away! The top up will also help with the retention of the colour, so the results will lasted longer.
Is Semi -Permanent make up safe?
Absolutely! I always carry out a consultation to ensure you do not have any medical conditions or allergies that would be a contra-indication to the treatment. Also at that time at patch test is performed to eliminate any allergic reaction to the pigment and numbing products.
Does Semi-Permanent make up hurt?
With your permission a numbing cream is applied at the start of the treatment and a secondary cream is used throughout the treatment. Most of my clients tell me it’s not painful, just a bit uncomfortable. They describe the feeling as “scratchy” or “tingly”. I wipe the skin throughout the treatment with a cleansing mist to help sooth the area and help reduce swelling and redness.
What can I expect after my treatment?
Generally with all SPMU treatments the colour is darker and more intense for the first 7-10 days. Initially you may feel slightly self conscious and aware of your new eyebrows / eyeliner, so I would always advise not getting the treatment done just before any special events, holidays etc.
Straight after the treatment you may experience light to moderate swelling and redness in the area, particularly with the eyeliner treatment. However, this will generally subside within 24hrs.
The healing skin will start to scab, flake away and then begin to lightened by around 40%. In many cases, it becomes patchy and the pigment/ colour appears to disappear! This is nothing to worry about, it is the pigment settling into the skin. After a few weeks the colour will come back to the surface, ready to be reassessed at the top up appointment.
What is the aftercare?
After any treatment you will be given clear aftercare instructions along side a healing schedule. So you can be confident about what to expect in the days and weeks ahead following your treatment.
There are slight differences with the eyebrow and eyeliner aftercare but generally you will need to:
Avoid prolonged contact with water and steam such as bathing, swimming, steam rooms etc.
Avoid make up application on the area.
No picking, scratching or rubbing the treated area.
Avoid sun exposure and sun beds.
Use the complimentary aftercare cream on the area once or twice a day.
*You will need to follow the aftercare instructions for the first 10-14 days post treatment*.
How long will my Semi-Permanent make up last?
It can last between 1-4 years depending on the individuals skin type. The way you follow the aftercare instructions, your sun exposure, facial products and lifestyle can all affect how long the pigment/colour remains in your skin. This will be explained in detail at the end of the treatment.
Gradual fading can be expected with SPMU, so an annual colour boost is recommended to keep it looking fresh.
